Project Location(s): Macomb County, MI

Current Focus:  Our team's current focus is to monitor water quality in the Great Lakes. We plan to test phosphorus levels at 18 different tributaries during summer, fall and spring seasons, including wet weather. With the information we gather, we will create a deliverably to bring to communities within Macomb County.

Mission: The Watershed Team's mission is to monitor water quality in the Great Lakes area and observe the effectiveness and impact of watershed improvement efforts.

Vision: Our team’s vision is to prepare our members to enter the working world with sustainability principles close to their heart, back them up with a supportive team, and accomplish some awesome human-centered work while doing so.

Team History: Our team was founded in 2014 in partnership with a Michigan alumnus couple Gloria Dei Lutheran Church / Central American Lutheran Mission Society, and the community of Chaguiton, Guatemala. A general needs assessment was conducted in the first trip to Chaguiton in March 2015, where water quality was determined a community concern. On the most recent trip (March ’17), solar disinfection was deemed the most feasible method of water purification for use in the community. Sawyer hollow fiber membrane filters were also given to the primary and preschool to provide an immediate solution to treat the water.

Last year, we phased out of that project and in to our current project which focuses on monitoring water quality in the Great Lakes area and specifically Macomb County currently. The past year was focused on creating this new project and figuring out who to partner with as well as what communities could benefit from our work. We have a very reliable contact at the Michigan DEQ and are going to assist in monitoring phosphorus levels at different tributaries in Macomb County.

Partner Organization: Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
