Green Urban Design Team
(Formally Known as Green Roof)
William Rainey (email@example.com)
Kevin Fietsam (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Project Location(s): Sloan Plaza Ann Arbor, MI
Current Focus: Last year, our team completed a rain garden project an Ann Arbor middle school. This involved choosing and budgeting optimal plants, designing the helping build the rain garden, and presenting the design process to students. The team also conducted research on 20 current rain gardens in Ann Arbor to calculate runoff trends and recommend potential improvements. This year, we are designing another rain garden at a local elementary school while looking for a new urban design project that incorporates sustainable goals.
Mission: Our mission is to work on projects that help community members focus on sustainable urban design to improve water quality, to reduce energy consumption, and to create a harmonious relationship with the environment in our communities.
Vision: Our vision is to give members and the community the ability to think sustainably and develop communities sustainably in a healthy fashion.
Team History: Green Roof was formed in Fall 2015 to design a green roof on top of Sloan Plaza's parking garage. Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, Green Roof worked on three different designs that could help improve storm water quality and volume, provide a social space for the residents, and reduce energy use associated with air conditioning. The team concluded the project with a final presentation for the owners and residents of Sloan Plaza. In Fall 2016, Green Roof began looking for a new partnership. The team connected with Catie Wytychak, a Water Quality Specialist and SNRE Alum who has worked in implementing and designing rain gardens for Washtenaw County schools. With her help and resources, the team designed a rain garden for A2 STEAM Middle School and oversaw its implementation in June 2017.
Partner Organization: Washtenaw County Commissioner's Office
